Strength to Strength Campaign Report

The Whiteside Scholarships

Eminent Toronto lawyer J. H. “Jack” Whiteside ’63 recently joined the ranks of Trinity College’s most generous benefactors.

Whiteside donated $1.5 million to the Strength to Strength Campaign to create endowed scholarships, each valued at approximately $15,000 per year. The inaugural scholarship will be awarded to a secondyear student this fall. If the Whiteside Scholar upholds the required academic qualifications, the award will be renewed for up to two more years, essentially following that deserving student through the rest of his or her undergrad career.

Next year, another second-year student will receive the award, with a new one added the following year. At any one time there will be up to four students progressing through their academic experience with the assistance of a Whiteside Scholarship.

Already an honorary lifetime member of the University of Toronto’s President’s Circle, Whiteside was further inspired to support Trinity through the Strength to Strength Campaign. He says his plan for the scholarship was strongly influenced by several meetings he had with former Provost Margaret MacMillan before she left office.

MacMillan, he says, felt strongly that the College’s greatest need was for endowed scholarships to assist deserving students. Whiteside agreed, saying its primary raison d’être is to benefit its high-quality students, and thus an extraordinary new scholarship was born.
