Requirements and Courses


The requirements for ES&L have recently been upgraded.

Both sets of requirements are posted below.  

Courses listed under the upgraded requirements may be used toward your ES&L major if you are fulfilling the pre September 23, 2007 requirements.

ES&L requirements for enrolments prior to September 23, 2007
Seven full courses or their equivalent (FCE)

  1. PHL 271H1 (to be taken in the first year of registration in the program)
  2. Six FCEs from Groups A-C, including at least ONE FCE from each group and at least TWO FCEs at the 300+level
  3. TRN 412H1 (to be taken in final year of registration in the program)


ES&L requirements for enrolments after September 23, 2007 

Four Compulsory Courses or Half-courses:

  1. Recommended to be taken in the first year of registration in the program:
    PHL 271H1 Law and Morality
    Justifications for the legal enforcement of morality; particular ethical issues arising out of the intersection of law and morality, such as punishment, freedom of expression and censorship, autonomy and paternalism, constitutional protection of human rights.
  2. To be taken in any year of registration in the program:
    POL 200Y1 Political Theory: Visions of the Just/Good Society
    A selective presentation of critical encounters between philosophy and politics, dedicated to the quest for articulation and founding of the just/good society. Among the theorists examined are Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Hobbes and Locke.

    OR

    PHL 265H1 Introduction to Political Philosophy
    An introduction to central issues in political philosophy, e.g., political and social justice, liberty and the criteria of good government. The writings of contemporary political philosophers, as well as major figures in the history of philosophy may be considered.
    OR

    PHL 275H1 Introduction to Ethics
    An introduction to central issues in ethics or moral philosophy, such as the objectivity of values, the nature of moral judgements, rights and duties, the virtues, and consequentialism. Readings may be drawn from a variety of contemporary and historical sources.
  3. To be taken in the second year of registration in the program:
    TRN 303H1 Ethics and Society
    An exploration of the ethical dimensions of selected contemporary social issues. Students in the major program in Ethics, Society, and Law have enrolment priority. Prerequisite: PHL 271H1.
  4.  To be taken in the final year of registration in the program:
    TRN 412H1 Seminar in Ethics, Society, and Law
    (Formerly TRN312H1) Students must be in their final year of registration in the Major Program: Ethics, Society, and Law. See the Registration Handbook and Timetable for enrolment procedures. Recommended preparation: TRN305Y1/WDW220Y1/ equivalent background knowledge. Exclusion: TRN312H1.

Optional Courses

IF you are counting POL 200Y1 as satisfaction for requirement 2. above you must complete FOUR AND A HALF additional full course equivalents (FCEs) from Groups A-D, including at least one FCE from each of groups A, B, and C, and at least two at the 300 level or higher.
ALTERNATIVELY, if you are counting PHL 265H1 or PHL 275H1 as satisfaction for requirement 2. above you must complete FIVE additional full course equivalents (FCEs) from Groups A-D, including at least one FCE from each of groups A, B, and C, and at least two FCEs at the 300 level or higher.
