Blithe Spirits: The Early Years of Children's Library Services in Toronto
Leslie McGrath, Head, Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books, Toronto Public Library

Founded in 1912, children's services at Toronto Public Library were intended to raise a generation of readers. The early librarians worked tirelessly to build fine collections and to promote them, following a sweeping directive that "only the best is good enough for children."
This is a brief look behind the scenes: how the service began, how books were chosen, and the growth of children's programs. What emerges is a portrait of some remarkable professionals whose influence - and whose presence - is still with us today.
Date: Wednesday April 4th, 2011
Location: George Ignatieff Theatre, 15 Devonshire Place, 8 p.m.
RSVP: Graham Library Office 416-978-2653 or e-mail the Friends of the Library
