Computing in the Library

Library Computers

The library has five types of computers for public access.  Check computer availability here.

Catalogue stations

  • In the stacks: one each in the north and south wings of the second and third floors
  • Catalogue and ROSI access only
  • No login required

Infostations

  • On the ground floor: the six standing terminals, and the five rightmost seated terminals under the garden-side windows opposite the Circulation Desk.
  • UTORid required to login
  • Catalogue, wider internet (including many UTL resources), kompozer (an HTML editor), Microsoft Office viewer: this allows you to open items to read or print, but you cannot make any changes to your documents (including printing multiple slides on one page).  If you need to make changes, you should use one of the:

Internet Office stations

  • On the ground floor: ten in the computer lab and the five seated terminals under the garden-side windows on the north side
  • UTORid required to login
  • Catalogue, wider internet (including many UTL resources), kompozer (a web editor), gimp (a digital image editor) and Microsoft Office XP

Scanner station

  • On the ground floor: the leftmost seated terminal under the garden-side windows on the south side
  • UTORid required to login
  • In addition to everything the Internet Office stations have, it has a scanner, scanning software, and the full Adobe Creative Suite.  Download a PDF with instructions for operating the scanner.

Stand Alone station

  • On the ground floor: opposite the door to the computer lab
  • See the Circulation Desk staff to gain access
  • The stand alone computer has no software, and is not connected to the internet or any other network.  It is used for accessing CD-ROMs.

Connecting to the Internet in the Library

The John W. Graham Library has more than 200 docking ports available for laptop access distributed in carrels, group study rooms, and reading rooms throughout its four floors; and wifi access in most study areas throughout the building. Current University students, staff, and faculty with a UTORid and a password can connect using UTORcwn. For information on connecting to UTORcwn see here.

WARNING:  Never leave your laptop or other property unattended.  Thefts do occur in the Library.

Which network should I use?

Current U of T Faculty, Staff, and Students

Connecting a Laptop

Laptops can be connected with an ethernet cord or wirelessly.

Wireless: The best network choice for laptops is the original UTORWin network. It is the easiest to set up, allows multiple users on the same computer, and requires a browser-based  login each time you connect. The password for the network is UToronto1home (case sensitive) and you log in using your UTORid and password.

Wired: All of the carrels in the library have plugs and Ethernet jacks, and most of the large tables have plugs and Ethernet jacks underneath them. If you encounter difficulty connecting with an Ethernet jack, let the staff at the circulation desk know.

Connecting a Smart Phone or other Wireless Device

The best network for smartphones and wireless devices is usually the UofT network. It will be faster for mobile devices, has a better range, and does not need a browser login each time it is used, but each device must be configured for an individual user so devices with multiple users should connect using the UTORWin network instead. Before logging on to the UofT network, you must verify your UTORid here.

Visiting Scholars

Eduroam is a wireless-sharing system that allows members from member institutions to use each other's wireless. Members of these institutions can logon to our Eduroam network. They will need to configure the wireless using the information provided by their home institution - they can link through the list. They can search their home institution's website, or navigate to the setup information from their home institution through the previous link.

For documentation on this and supported wireless cards please go here.

Laptop Registration and User Profiles:

UTORcwn identifies your computer by the connected network card’s MAC address. This MAC address, and thereby your network card, must be registered with the UTORcwn service. If you connect with a different network card, you will be directed to register the new MAC address.  Follow the on-screen instructions.

Notes on Logoff/Timeout

You are automatically 'logged out' after 30 minutes of network inactivity and the assigned IP address is reused.

You can log out of UTORcwn manually by browsing to logout.wireless.utoronto.ca

Printing in the Library

All computers in the library are networked to the Graham B + W Printer and the Graham Colour printer; the printers can also be accessed wirelessly. (Visit the UTL wireless printing web page for instructions on how to print using the wireless network).

Printing in the Library defaults to double-sided, black and white.  The cost is $0.15/side for black and white, $0.75/side for colour.  In order to print in colour, you need to select the Graham Library Colour Printer.  Any pages that have colour on them will be $0.75/side, but black and white sheets will still only be $0.15/side.

If you want to print single-sided, you will need to change the setting.  Whichever printer is selected, the finishing options can be accessed by pressing the <Properties...> button. For the Black and White printer, the screen will look like this:

The second box, "Print on Both Sides" defaults to "Flip on Long Edge".  For single-sided copies, change this to "None".

For the Colour printer, the screen will look like this:

Note that the "Finishing" tab, where these changes can be made, is the second one.  For single-sided copies, under "Document Options", change the default "Print on Both Sides" from "Long Edge" to "Off".

After you select <OK>, a dialogue box will pop up asking you to name the print job.

After you do so, the next dialogue box to pop up will confirm the cost of printing your job, which printer it will ultimately go to, and how many pages of black and white/colour will be printed.  It will also indicate if it is duplexed, but gives no indication if it is not.

Here is the confirmation page for a job of one page black and white:

Here is a confirmation page for a job of two colour sheets, duplexed.

Because of the extensive information on this page, we do NOT refund patrons who pay for a print job that is more/different than what they wanted.

To pay for the job, use your T-Card to release it using the print-station computer.  If the item was printed using "Graham Library B&W Printer" the print job should print on the regular system printer.  If it was printed using "Graham Library Colour Printer" it will print on the Library Office printer - there will be no indication there, and at the bottom of the print-station screen it will say "Job printed on GR-P2-colour. Command Successful."  Come to the Circulation Desk, and briefly identify the print job (e.g. it's an essay, it's ten pages).  A staff member will retrieve your print job for you.

Photocopying in the Library

The John W. Graham Library has two photocopiers, both of which are located on the ground floor, in the alcove across from the Circulation Desk.  One takes coin, the other takes a T-card.  The charge is $0.10/exposure.  If you need assistance in operating the machine, please ask at the Circulation Desk.

Viewing Microform/Slides/Other Media in the Library

The Graham Library has an extensive collection of non-print material (all of which can be found in the catalogue). The Library has equipment to view all of this material, as well as material from elsewhere.  The Library's audio-visual equipment includes the following:

  2. If the booking is not for a class, the T-Card of the person requesting the AV equipment will be kept at the Circulation Desk for the duration of the booking. If the booking is for a group, only one T-Card is required.
  3. The staff member will accompany the individual/group to the AV room located on the lower level of the Library and set up the requested equipment for immediate use. If the AV room has been booked in advance for a class, the room and the equipment will be set up prior to the start time of the class.
  4. When finished using the equipment, please notify Circulation Desk staff immediately so that the equipment can be securely stored. The AV room may be booked only for use of the AV equipment, but the room may be used for studying by an individual or a group between bookings.
