Simple instructions for conducting such searches are offered below. For a complete guide to Logos, please consult the manual kept at the circulation desk. A video demonstrating the use of Logos is also available.

I. Getting Started

The left-hand side of the screen contains the Library Browser. This is the area listing all of the texts available in Logos. To select a text for viewing or searching, scroll down to the desired item and do one of the following:

  1. double-click on the selection using the right mouse button;
  2. single-click on the view selection button on the Library Browser tool bar using the left mouse button;
  3. click on your selection using the right mouse button, then click "View Selection" on the pull-down menu. The selected text will open and appear in the right-hand work area.

Repeat this procedure for each text you wish to open.

Once opened, texts may be tiled and linked for easier use. To tile texts, select Window from the pull-down menu and then either Tile Vertically or Tile Horizontally or click the Tile Horizontally button (2 dark and 2 white horizontal stripes). Linking texts ensures that they will be synchronized when scrolled. To do this, click the Links icon (the yellow chain) in a text window and click on "Set A". Repeat for each text you wish to link.

II. Searching Using the Strong's Numbering System

If you do not have a grasp of Hebrew or Greek, you can still search for terms in these languages by using the Strong's Numbering System. These numbers are available only by selecting the KJV text. As you pass the cursor over the words in the KJV, you will notice that the Strong's numbers appear in the small window at the bottom of the screen. Make a note of all of the numbers you wish to search, remembering which are from the OT and which are from the NT. Next, click the magnifying glass icon to call up the search screen. In the Options tab, select either "Hebrew Strong Numbers" or "Greek Strong's Numbers" in the Languages box. Set the Search Type to "Concordance" and Books, to "Active Book". Finally, enter the Strong's number you wish to search in the Search Query window and click on the Search button to execute your search. You may search for combinations of Strong's numbers by using the boolean operators described below under IV. Complex Searching.

III. Simple Searching From Within a Biblical Text

If you are already looking at a Biblical text, you may perform a search for any word by highlighting that word and clicking the right mouse button. From the menu that appears, select "Speed Search", then "All Books". After a few moments a list of matching references will appear. An easier way to open a search query is to simply double-click on any word. To see the context of each matching reference, click the Show Hits in Context button (2 parallel pages topped by a blue band) on the window toolbar. This will display the context of each match with the matching element highlighted in blue. A Speed Search window may be linked to other windows in the manner described above under I. Getting Started.

IV. Complex Searching

  1. To search for a term or phrase, click on the Search button (the magnifying glass). Click on More in the search box to access the complex searching screen. The complex searching screen has six tabbed areas (Options, Word List, Filter Search, TVM, Morphology and Operators) that can be used as part of any search.
  2. In the Options box, set the desired language (e.g. Greek, Hebrew, English etc.) by clicking on the down arrow beside the Languages box. Set Search Type to "Concordance", "Phrase" or Topic". (Use "Concordance" to search for individual words or words linked with Boolean operators. To search for strings of words, use "Phrase". For reference searches, set the search type to "Concordance" and type your reference [E.g. REF (John 1:1)] in the search query box.
  3. Click on the Word List tab. Select the desired word from the scrolling index by clicking on the vertical scroll bar or by typing in the word itself. Click on any word to transfer it to the Search Query box. To expand the range of your search you may add a wildcard character anywhere in a word placed in the Search Query box. Use "?" to represent any single character and "*" to represent multiple characters.
  4. If you wish to search for several words in combination, you may link then with Boolean operators (e.g. AND, OR, NOT) chosen through the Operators tab.
  5. Click on the TVM (tense, voice, mood) and Morphology tabs to limit your search by a word's grammatical characteristics.
  6. When you have finished constructing your search, click on the Search button. The resulting search window may be linked to others as described above in Simple Searches. Click, Show Hits in Context to get a list of your matches in the verses in which they appear.

V. Printing

To print the results of a search, click the Printer icon on the main tool bar. On the Print screen, click the Print tab. The Print tab offers you several options for printing your results.

  1. To produce a list of references that match your search criteria, select Search Hit Descriptions.
  2. To produce a list of matches and the immediate context in which they appear, select Search Hits in Context.
  3. To produce a list showing each complete verse in which a match appears, select Full Text of Search Hits.

If you wish to use Logos to print a portion of a Biblical text, select a text from the Library Browser as described above under "Getting Started". Click within the text box so that the name of the desired text is highlighted in blue. Click the Printer icon. On the Print screen, click the Print tab and select the Bible version from the pull-down Bible window. Type in the desired verse reference in the Range box and click OK.
