IT'S A CRIME
Business Ethics, Moral Motivation and White-Collar Crime
With Conrad Black facing charges in Chicago, the final talk in this year's three-part Alumni Lecture Series could hardly be more topical.
On April 9, Prof. Joseph Heath, Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy, University of Toronto, will talk about business ethics and white-collar crime. "One of the peculiar features of business ethics is that it deals with situations in which there is usually no real debate over what the 'right' thing to do is," he says. The problem lies in getting people to do it."
These sorts of motivational questions are ones that have long preoccupied criminologists, especially those interested in white-collar crime. "Business ethicists can learn some surprising things by shifting their focus away from unethical toward more forthrightly illegal forms of behaviour," says Heath.
