GOOD KARMA
Fourth-year Trinity student Matto Mildenberger has won the University of Toronto Alumni Association Moss Scholarship, which recognizes academic achievement and extra-curricular leadership in a graduating student. Out of the six finalists for the award, half were Trinity students; as well as Matto, Leah Stokes and Fiona Taylor also vied for the award.
The prize, U of T's most prestigious Arts & Science scholarship, is worth up to $16,650 for post-graduate study. It will be awarded to Matto, a prime leader in the environmental movement on campus, at the 2007 Awards of Excellence ceremony on Wednesday, May 9 in the Great Hall of Hart House.
Meanwhile, Sadia Rafiquddin (0T8) was one of six recipients March 22 of the New Pioneers Award, presented by Skills for Change, a non-profit agency, to assist and recognize the efforts of immigrants and refugees. Last year, Sadia was chosen one of 20 outstanding Canadian students to travel to Botswana with World University Service of Canada for a six-week internship on HIV/AIDS. This summer, she will return to Africa to do research on HIV/AIDS at the University of Namibia.
Overall, Trinity produced an outstanding crop of volunteer leaders in 2007, as 13 students received Gordon Cressy Awards for extracurricular involvement and leadership. This year's winners were: Mia Baumeister, Sarah Cercone, Aldous Cheung, Ethan Hoddes, Kusala Jayasuriya, Brian Kolenda, Cynthia Lan, Lawrence Lau, Matto Mildenberger, Leah Stokes, Fiona Taylor, Danielle Westbrook and Bernice Pui-Yu.
