HOMECOMING
On August 15, the Rev. Dr. Dana Fisher, Humphrys Chaplain at Trinity College since 2006, will assume new duties as Rector of St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in downtown Ottawa.
Although she was born in Oakville, the move to Ottawa seems like a homecoming for Fisher, who earned her BA in French language and literature at Ottawa University and a master’s degree in the same subject at Carleton University. “Athough I came to Trinity to study for my MDiv, I went back to Ottawa and was ordained there. So it really does feel like going ‘home,’” she says.
Fisher completed her Master of Divinity degree in 1981 and a Doctor of Ministry in 1994, both at Trinity. Beginning in 1996, she taught courses at the College in spiritual formation. Her interest in the spiritual nature of human beings led her to innovative modes of worship. While Chaplain, she introduced reflections -- short homilies -- to the Wednesday Choral Evensong. “Many people, both staff and students, have thanked me for these.”
Fisher and her husband have bought a condo in Ottawa within walking distance of St. John’s, a parish that seems ideal for her novel approach. “Liturgically and theologically, St. John’s lives in the 21st Century and is very active in justice issues,” says Fisher. “I am excited about both those aspects of life at St. John’s.”
The Humphrys Chaplaincy was created in 1995 as the result of a $1-million fund established by the Rev. Margaret (Humphrys) Fleck and Prof. James Fleck. The position of chaplain was renamed "Humphrys Chaplain" in memory of Margaret's mother, Constance Larkin Knight Humphrys.
The College is currently seeking a new Humphrys Chaplain, its fourth.
