Class of 1989 members J. Pitman Patterson, Jeremy Devereux, Michael M. Watson, William Denton, John Oakes, Kenneth Roberts, Stuart Waugh, and George Begic gathered in July at Harbord House, the Toronto pub owned by Oakes, to welcome Roberts, who was visiting from Europe.
Emmeline Caplan ’24 has completed a dual Master of Public Administration and Master of Global Affairs through the London School of Economics and Political Science and the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. During her graduate studies, she spent six months at the United Nations working on sustainable development. She has since begun a new role as a policy analyst with the Strategic Policy Branch at the Ontario Ministry of Health.
Gloria Hildebrandt ’79 and her partner, Mike Davis, received a Landowner Stewardship Award from Credit Valley Conservation in June. The award recognizes their work on their 14-acre property, including extensive invasive species management and habitat restoration, and their placement of a permanent conservation easement with the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy.
Simon Hong ’93 (above, left) helped move his daughter, Isabelle (above, centre) into Trinity’s new Lawson Centre for Sustainability this fall, where she is among the first students to live in the 357-bed residence. Isabelle joins her brother, now in his fourth year at Trinity. Hong told U of T News that he never pushed his children to follow in his footsteps, and that they chose Trinity after hearing about his own experience. “I told them about what benefits to expect if they attended,” he said. “A great education, networking connections and being able to set themselves up for the future.”
Margaret Kim ’11 has joined Gowling WLG as Toronto-based counsel in the firm’s international trade and customs group. She previously served as counsel to the deputy attorney general at the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, and as Crown counsel at the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. Earlier, she was an associate in the trade and investment practices at Bennett Jones LLP and Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP.
Eunhee Lee ’04 was named a candidate this year for organization chair of the Gangnam-gu C electoral district with the Reform Party in South Korea.
Mary Thompson ’65 has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. A Distinguished Professor Emerita in the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics, which she joined in 1969, Thompson is recognized for her advances in survey methodology and public policy research. She has led survey design for the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project since 2002, and co-founded the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute, serving as its first scientific director. She has also long championed women in the mathematical and statistical sciences, including as founding chair of Waterloo’s Women in Mathematics committee.
Weddings
Marcus Heinmaa ’13 and Sarah Harrison were married on August 23, 2025, at The Briars Resort & Spa in Jackson’s Point, Ontario.
