Message to the Community on the Events in Quebec City

Posted: January 30, 2017

Dear Members of the Trinity Community:

The Canadian flags at Trinity College have been lowered to half-mast in recognition of those killed and those whose lives have been changed forever because of the terrible shooting at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec in Quebec City.

This act of violence is all the more horrific because the innocent victims were shot as they prayed in their mosque – their place of worship. We are shocked and deeply saddened at the senseless violation of our core Canadian rights and freedoms  – to life, liberty and freedom of religion. In our culturally diverse country, everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or religion, deserves to be treated with respect and dignity in an environment free from fear and discrimination.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victims, and we stand in solidarity with Muslim communities, here in Toronto and across the country.

Please join us on Tuesday, January 31 from 12 pm to 1 pm in the Trinity College Chapel. The Chapel’s weekly Peace Prayers will honour victims of violence, at the Quebec City mosque and elsewhere. Feel free to drop by the Chapel for as long as you need, light a candle, record your thoughts, or simply sit in silence.

Yours truly,

Provost Mayo Moran
