Companion of the Order of Canada
James Arthur, C.C.: For his seminal contributions to contemporary mathematics, notably through his groundbreaking advancements to the theory of numbers’ trace formula, a complex mathematical formula that relates geometric and spectral information.
A leading mathematician, University Professor James Arthur is among two University of Toronto researchers named to the highest rank of the Order of Canada. “I have had scientific recognition in Canada, but I feel very proud – and thrilled – to be recognized more broadly with the Order of Canada,” he said.
Members of the Order of Canada
Pekka Sinervo, C.M.: For his contributions to particle physics and for his groundbreaking research in the study of heavier quarks.
Professor Pekka Sinervo, of U of T’s department of physics, is being recognized for decades of working to understand the basic building blocks of our universe – atoms, molecules and the like. With a focus on electromagnetic forces, Sinervo uses the Large Hadron Collider to study particle interactions at very high energies. Having written or co-written more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed journals, his research group was involved in the discovery of the top quark, the heaviest known particle, and now uses the quark as a tool to search for evidence of new, massive particles. Sinervo is a former dean of U of T's Faculty of Arts & Science and, from 2008 to 2015, served as senior vice-president of research at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR).
John Ferguson Godfrey, P.C., C.M.: For his commitment as a public servant and educator who has enriched Canada’s media landscape.
The Hon. John Ferguson Godfrey, a former cabinet minister and parliamentary secretary to the prime minister, had a long and distinguished career in public service. Prior to entering politics in 1993, he was the vice-president of CIFAR. He also spent four years as editor of the Financial Post and 14 years in academia at Nova Scotia’s University of King’s College, where was he served as both president and vice-chancellor. He holds a bachelor’s degree in modern history and a master’s in English literature from U of T, and was named a Member. He currently serves on Trinity College's Honorary Degrees and Honorary Fellows Committee.
