Provost Mayo Moran Welcomes You to the New Academic Year 2019-2020

Posted: September 04, 2019

Dear Members of the Trinity Community:

As we start the 2019-2020 academic year, I want to extend a very warm welcome to all members of the Trinity community. I hope you’ve had a wonderful summer and are excited as we aIl are to start the new year!

To our newest students, a special welcome and warm wishes for Orientation week. Matriculation Convocation is a very special Trinity moment. It marks the beginning of higher education and I hope the celebration inspires you about the journey ahead. At tonight’s ceremony, an honorary fellowship – Trinity’s highest honour – will be conferred upon Derek Allen for his incredible contributions to the College. Prof. Allen served as Trinity’s Dean of Arts and was responsible for the growth of the College’s excellent academic programs. We will also honour Rosemary McCarney, a distinguished diplomat and author who just stepped down as Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the Conference on Disarmament.

For returning members of the community, welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful summer and are looking forward to returning to campus. You will see that we have been working hard to ensure that we provide the very best experience here at Trinity. We are especially delighted to welcome students to our new Student Services Centre, which now occupies most of the front hallway of the main building. The Centre brings key services of the offices of the Registrar and Dean of Students together into one beautifully renovated location. Our goal was to provide a more welcoming and accessible experience for students and for all campus visitors. I hope that you enjoy it.

We are also thrilled that this year we are launching our new Community Advisor (CA) program with eight wonderful CAs. They are all upper year students who will work with the Student Services team to help support community development and programming in residence. We know how important peer-to-peer contact is to the student experience, and through programs such as this, we are continuing to strengthen our community, making it welcoming for everyone. We’re also welcoming a number of new Academic Dons and our new student leaders to campus. We all look forward to working together to make the Trinity experience an outstanding one for all of our students.

I’m also delighted to update you on the work we are doing to add much-needed student space. After a comprehensive selection process, we hired award-winning architects Mecanoo Architecten from the Netherlands in partnership with Toronto firm RDH Architects Inc. (RDHA) to design and build a new building that will provide academic, residential and social space for Trinity. The team has been working hard to develop a vision and plan, and we look forward to sharing some of their early thinking with all members of the community as the year gets underway. Sustainability is especially important and we aspire to show what is possible in a building that is beautiful, sustainable and human-centred. I look forward to working with all of you on this exciting and important project.

The whole team here at Trinity is looking forward to the year ahead with you and to doing our very best to ensure that your years at Trinity are filled with transformative experiences and lasting memories.

I hope we all have a chance to meet as the school year progresses. Until then, I wish you the very best as the new year gets underway.

Yours truly,
Mayo Moran
Provost and Vice-Chancellor
