Trinity Welcomes New Associates to the College Community

Congratulations to our Newest Associates of Trinity College

Outstanding academics within the University of Toronto community, Trinity’s Fellows and Associates play an active role in the life of the College. They enhance the student experience and enrich the College’s intellectual community through their many contributions, including: scholarly exchange through their participation at College events, programs and activities such as Low Table dinners; and engaging in conversations and student mentorship opportunities. We are grateful for their commitment to Trinity and look forward to their ongoing engagement in the life of the College and with our students.

Appointed Associates of the College, each for a two-year term (effective July 1, 2017):

Mark Taylor: Prof. Mark Taylor is a Trinity graduate who went on to do his PhD at Harvard, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at MIT. Recruited to the University of Toronto Department of Chemistry in 2007, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. Mark holds a Canada Research Chair in Molecular Recognition and Catalysis and recently received a McLean Award from the University of Toronto for his research on the structure of carbohydrates.

Tim Sayle: Prof. Tim Sayle is a graduate of the Trinity’s International Relations program at the University of Toronto. Following his MPA and MA, he received his PhD from Temple University in 2014, followed by postdoctoral studies at the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University. Recruited to the University of Toronto in 2016, Tim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History where he studies Modern global security and the post-1945 history of international relations.

Rupert Kaul: Prof. Rupert Kaul is a Trinity graduate who went on to get his MD from the University of Toronto before receiving his PhD from the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, Oxford. A Clinician Scientist in the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network, he is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Immunology at the University of Toronto, holding positions of Director of the Division of Infections Disease in the Department of Medicine and Head of the Division of Infectious Disease at Mount Saini Hospital and the University Health Network. Rupert’s research is in the area of the immune response to HIV and he holds the U of T/OHTN Endowed Chair in HIV Research.

Zeynep Celik Alexander: Prof. Zeynep Celik Alexander graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at Istanbul Technical University, before doing her MArch at Harvard University and her PhD at MIT. Recruited to the University of Toronto in 2010, she is currently an Associate Professor in the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design. Zeynep is an architectural historian whose work focuses on the history of modern architecture since the Enlightenment with an emphasis on German modernism.

Appointed Senior Research Associate of the College, for a three-year term (effective July 1, 2017):

Maria Banda: Dr. Maria Banda is a graduate of Trinity College and the International Relations program. Following her MPhil and DPhil from Baliol College, Oxford and JD from Harvard Law School, Maria worked with WilmerHale LLP in Washington DC as an Associate and subsequently Senior Associate before joining the University of Toronto Faculty of Law as a Graham Fellow in 2016.

Reappointment of Senior Research Associate of the College for a three-year term (effective July 1, 2017):

Jill Shefrin: Jill Shefrin (BA, MLS, University of Toronto; FRHistS) is an historian of children’s books and printed pastimes and of education. Jill’s research focuses on the use of printed pastimes and teaching aids in early modern and nineteenth-century education, particularly for girls. She has been studying early children’s books and pastimes since 1975 and is currently engaged in a study of English ‘school pieces’ (c.1650-c.1850) and an examination of the practice of teaching children with pictures, focusing on an extraordinary and previously unknown watercolour manuscript (1719-20).
