The Derek Pearson Henderson Allen Award

Inaugural recipient of the Derek Pearson Henderson Allen Award

"As an ES&L student, I was challenged to think critically about justice, responsibility, and the structures that shape our world. The award reflects the spirit of the program which has shaped so much of who I have become."

Reflections by Ellie Twohey

I am honoured to be the inaugural recipient of the Derek Pearson Henderson Allen Award. This recognition has meant a great deal to me, for its affirmation of my academic work and commitment to social justice during my time in the Ethics, Society, and Law (ES&L) program at the University of Toronto.

As an ES&L student, I was challenged to think critically about justice, responsibility, and the structures that shape our world. The award reflects the spirit of the program which has shaped so much of who I have become.

The financial support was also invaluable as I prepared for my next chapter. I graduated in June 2025 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in ES&L, with minors in English and Political Science, and headed to Cambridge in the UK to pursue a Master of Law degree.

I am deeply grateful to the family of Derek Allen for funding the award. It not only supports students but sends a powerful message about the value of ethical leadership and social impact. I trust future recipients will also be encouraged and inspired to continue the legacy of Derek Allen himself.
