Pathways for Tomorrow/Reimagining Contemporary Ministries Doctoral Scholarship

The Faculty of Divinity at Trinity College is pleased to announce a new PhD scholarship for the 2023-2024 academic year: the Pathways for Tomorrow / Reimagining Contemporary Ministries Doctoral Scholarship. This award will support PhD research in Theology in the Faculty of Divinity. The scholarship covers domestic tuition and fees, as well as a stipend of $15,000 CAD, annually for four years. Applications are now open.

The PhD research will focus on one of the project’s four initiatives related to Trinity Divinity’s Lilly Endowment Inc. funded project, “Reimagining Contemporary Ministries for a Renewing Church”. These include research in the following areas: (i) innovative and missional models for church ministry in a post-Christian, multifaith, and multicultural context; (ii) forms of spiritual direction appropriate to preparing for ongoing innovative ministry and supporting church leaders as they confront the challenges of innovative and flexible ministry; (iii) decolonializing theological education and on ethnic diversity in the Church; (iv) new models to introduce new Christians to the living tradition of the church and to prepare for academic theological education.

The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong academic record, a research proposal focused on one of the four initiatives described above, and must be admitted to the PhD program at Trinity College and the Toronto School of Theology.  For more information on the admission requirements to the PhD program, click here; and to apply to the PhD program, click here.

Trinity College’s Faculty of Divinity received a grant of nearly $1 million (USD) from the Lilly Endowment Inc. to the University of Toronto. The Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative is a three-phase initiative that Lilly Endowment launched in January 2021. The Initiative is designed to help theological schools in the United States and Canada as they prioritize and respond to the most pressing challenges they face as they prepare pastoral leaders for Christian congregations both now and into the future.
