Derek Allen
Derek Allen is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. He was appointed Vice-Provost & Dean of Arts at Trinity College for a five-year term in 1996, and was reappointed for a further five-year term that began in 2002, and was renewed again in 2009 for a further three-year term. As Dean of Arts, he is responsible for the College's academic program in the Faculty of Arts & Science of the University of Toronto.
During his administrative appointment, he is teaching only one course (in informal logic), but he has frequently also taught courses in ethics, epistemology, and Marxism. His principal research interests are in argumentation theory and Marxian theory. Over a number of years he has been active in curriculum development at the University of Toronto (particularly at Trinity College), and has taken a special interest in initiatives designed to provide graduate students with training in university teaching.
He received his B.A. from the University of Toronto, and his B.Phil. and D.Phil. from Oxford University. He is a 3M Teaching Fellow (1995), and Vice-President of the Association for Informal Logic and Critical Thinking.
