Dear Members of the Trinity Community:
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Trinity alumnus The Rev. Canon John Duncan Whittall, who passed away on November 13, 2025.
Ordained in 1969 in the Diocese of Montreal, The Rev. John Whittall served as Trinity College’s Dean of Men (1980 to 1987) and Dean of College (1982 to 1987), and maintained a lasting connection to the College and members of the community well beyond his formal tenure. He was a mentor and support for many Trinity Faculty of Divinity students.
He served in the Diocese of Niagara before transferring to the Diocese of Toronto in 1988. In Toronto he served as Incumbent of St. Wilfrid, Islington. Upon retirement in 2009, he served as Interim Priest-in-Charge of Holy Family, Heart Lake (Brampton), St. Mary Magdalene, Apostles, the Parish of Campbellford, Hastings & Roseneath, and as Honorary Assistant of St. Mary Magdalene.
His funeral will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene (477 Manning Avenue, Toronto). Visitation will be held at St. Mary Magdalene on Friday, Nov. 21 after the 6 pm Mass, and on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 1 pm prior to the funeral.
The College extends its heartfelt condolences to The Rev. John Whittall’s family, friends and colleagues. He will be fondly remembered by the Trinity College community.
