Convocation Speaker: Dr. Rosemary McCarney

Trinity College alumna Rosemary McCarney is an award-winning humanitarian, business and not for profit leader, author and recognized public speaker. Her extensive career in law, business, academia, civil society and diplomacy has taken her to live and work in over 100 countries. She serves on the Boards and Advisory Councils of numerous organizations and has held leadership roles in academia, the volunteer sector and business. She is the recipient of two Honorary Degrees from Case Western Reserve University and from Trinity College in 2019. From 2015-2019, she was Canada’s Ambassador to the United Nations and the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. Returning to Canada, she took up two roles at the University of Toronto as the Senior Fellow in Foreign and Defense Policy and now Diplomat in Residence at Massey College and the James Coutts Visitor in International Relations at Trinity College where she teaches in the International Relations program. She was previously the inaugural Pearson-Sabia Distinguished Visitor in International Relations at Trinity College. She is a passionate multilateralist and a committed advocate for human rights and human rights defenders, and for the power of diplomacy, consensus building and the need for interdisciplinary perspectives to address the challenges of our time. Her award-winning series of children’s books, intended to make social justice and human rights issues accessible to young readers, have been translated and published around the world.
