Heaslip Scholars Siyi Liu and Gwyneth DalzellFor second-year Trinity College students Gwyneth Dalzell and Siyi (Megan) Liu, receiving the 2018-2019 William and Nona Heaslip Scholarship will have a lasting impact on their undergraduate years and will allow them to focus on their future.

“Attending university, and Trinity in particular, has been a dream of mine since I was quite young,” says Gwyneth Dalzell [pictured above: right], who is pursuing a major in archaeology, with a double minor in art history and material culture. “In order to manage the financial burden of being in school, I had a job that consumed the majority of my time. Additionally, balancing an intense work schedule and full-time studies left little room for anything else. With this scholarship I have been able to adjust my priorities and truly become a student. I have the time and energy to be invested in my studies. This scholarship has rekindled my passion for academia and given me the hope that I can be successful.”

For Siyi (Megan) Liu [pictured above: left], the scholarship gives her the freedom to be more involved with the community and more ambitious with her goals. “I hope to start my own business around sustainability one day, and that means building networks and being involved with entrepreneurship now. Those opportunities come with a price, and the support offered by the Heaslip Scholarship will help me immensely towards that goal of making a change in our world,” says Megan, who is studying in the Rotman Commerce program, specializing in management, with a focus in strategy and innovation.

“Student awards are one of the most vital ways we support our incredible students at Trinity,” says Mayo Moran, Provost and Vice-Chancellor of Trinity College, noting that the College offers more than $1 million in awards annually to students. “We are so grateful to the Heaslips for establishing this generous scholarship so that our students can pursue their education while participating in new opportunities to enhance their university experience. A well-deserved congratulations to this year’s Heaslip Scholars, Megan and Gwyneth.”

Since 2005, 28 outstanding Trinity College students have become awarded the William and Nona Heaslip Scholarship. Each year, the scholarship, valued at $15,000 per year (twice renewable), is awarded to two students beginning their second year of study at Trinity who have demonstrated high academic achievements, a commitment to extracurricular involvement and financial need. The scholarship allows students who would otherwise need to support themselves to engage fully in their university experience.

After establishing this scholarship at Trinity, the Heaslips went on to replicate the model at nine other universities across Canada. They also established the William & Nona Heaslip Trinity St. Antony’s Scholarship for Trinity graduates studying International Relations at Oxford.
