Winter Break 2022-2023 FAQs

Trinity College Residence will be closed for the winter break. The last day that residence will be open is December 21, 2022, with all students required to vacate their rooms by 12:00 pm (noon) on that day. Students are welcome to move back to their rooms at Trinity College on Sunday January 8, 2023 starting at 8:00 am.

  • All residence students will be required to return their keys to the Welcome Desk when they leave for winter break. Students will not be able to get back into their room during the University closure from December 22 at 12:00 pm to January 9 at 8:00 am.
  • When you leave for winter break, bring all items that you could possibly need while you’re away – please note that anything you do not need can be left in your room, but you will not be able to return to Trinity over the break to retrieve items as the College will be closed.
When do I have to leave residence for the Winter Break?

As the Residence Agreement, all residents are expected to vacate their room no later than 48 hours after their final fall exam or by 12:00 pm (noon) on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, whichever date is earlier.

Do I have to move all of my belongings out when I leave for the Winter Break?

No; as you will be returning to the same room, you may leave everything behind and take only things that are essential for your travel during the break as well as your valuables (jewelry, wallet, passport, medical/insurance card etc.).

I need a place in town to stay for part of or the entire Winter Break, what should I do?

If you are in need of housing for any portion of the winter break, please be informed that the University of Toronto has negotiated a preferential rate of $129 per night at The Chelsea, a 4-star hotel located 1 km south of SMC on Gerrard Street.  The Chelsea has its own coffee shop, garden café, and restaurant where students who are staying can receive 20% off food prices by showing their T-card.  The Chelsea also has a large pool, hot tub, sauna, and fitness center. The $129 rate is valid for the nights of December 21, 2022 – January 8, 2023 (inclusive) and is subject to availability and valid for UofT students only.

To qualify for the UofT rate, you must:

  1. Book a minimum stay of 5 nights and
  2. Be at least 18 years of age (ID and TCard are required at check-in)

*Please note that you also have the option to share a hotel room as a way to reduce costs and/or to have company over the holidays. However, it is your responsibility to find your own roommates should you opt to share a hotel room during the Winter Break.
To book a room, simply email cstor.specialtyres@chelseatoronto.com, with the following information:

Full name (If you are booking with a friend, only one person should email, and include both occupants’ names)

  • Phone number
  • College Affiliation (i.e. Trinity College)
  • Dates you are interested in booking

A sales associate will contact you to confirm your reservation and take a deposit via credit card (Note: a $150 hold will be placed on the card for incidentals).

Alternatively, you may also consult U of T’s Housing off-campus resources provided HERE.

Can I get my mail from the Welcome Desk during the Winter Break?

Before leaving for the Winter Break, please be sure to pick up any remaining parcels from the Welcome Desk prior to leaving for the break. As Trinity College is closed over the winter break, residents will not be able to access the College to pick up any mail or parcels over the break.

If you are expecting parcels or mail during the College closure and cannot wait until the College re-opens to receive your delivery, please make appropriate arrangements with your mail courier to have your mail redirected. Regular parcel pick-up hours at the Trinity Welcome Desk, and access to the mailroom, will resume when the College reopens on Sunday January 8th at 8:00am; at that time students will be able to pick up all parcels received and held over the break.

How do I move back into residence after the Winter Break?

Students will be able to move back into residence on or after January 8th, 2023, at 8:00 am. Prior to moving back, students are required to book a move-in timeslot via their StarRez portal. Timeslots will open on Wednesday December 7th at 3:00 pm.

Please also be aware of the travel restrictions that may apply to you if you plan on leaving Ontario or Canada, and of the supports offered to students through U of T: COVID-19 Information for U of T Students. Have a fun and safe Winter Break!
