Music in the Chapel: 2023-2024

Throughout the academic year, members of the community are welcome to attend services, musical performances and concerts in the Trinity College Chapel (6 Hoskin Avenue). Unless otherwise noted, these events are free and all are welcome to attend (open to the public). Please check this webpage regularly for additional events and schedule changes.

Trinity College Choral Evensong: Winter Term 2024 – weekly on Wednesdays

Evensong Service: accompanied by the Trinity College Chapel Choir (photo), and the Bevan Organ Scholar

Wednesday at 5:15 pm to 6 pm:

  • January 10, 17, 24, 31
  • February 7, 14 and 28 (no service on February 21: U of T fall reading week)
  • March 6, 13 and 20
    • March 6 Evensong includes a work setting of Sinnes Round, a text by George Herbert with music by Thomas Bell
    • March 13 Evensong is sung to the music of Henry Purcell (1659-1695)
  • April 3

Tenebrae Service: March 27 at 8 pm – Wednesday in Holy Week. The beautiful service of Tenebrae, sung by candlelight, includes the setting of psalm 51 by Georgio Allegri.

  • Tuesday, January 23 at 7 pm: the Chapel Choir is among performers at the Gryphon Trio event in Seeley Hall – register (free) to attend
  • Sunday, February 4: the Chapel Choir will perform at Choral Evensong at St. James Cathedral-Toronto at 4:30 pm

Sacred Music in a Sacred Space: Winter Term 2024 – monthly on Mondays

Curated by Peter Drobac; features vocal chamber ensembles in a variety of sacred music from Eastern and Western liturgical traditions. The intent of this series is to present music usually sung in a liturgical or devotional context, not as part of a service, and not as a concert, but for quiet meditation, or simply to absorb and enjoy.

Concert | Trinity Bach Project: Oct. 12, Nov. 23, 2023, and Jan. 11 and Feb. 15, 2024

The Trinity Bach Project: an ensemble of vocal and instrumental musicians that performs music of Bach and other, thematically-connected, composers.

  • Thursday, January 11 at 12 pm: Chamber Baroque – This concert reprises the program of Trinity Bach Project’s 2023 summer chamber music tour, featuring instrumental baroque music by Bach and others and a thrilling work for coloratura soprano, Handel’s rediscovered “Gloria.”
  • Thursday, February 15 at 12 pm: Bach and Tallis – The last concert of the season looks back before Bach once again, this time to the great English Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis, striking a Lenten note “from the depths” with Cantata BWV 131 “Aus der Tiefen,” Tallis’s “Lamentations of Jeremiah,” and Motet BWV 228 Fürchte dich nicht (“Do not fear”).

Enquiries about joining the Chapel Choir are always welcome and should be made to Thomas Bell, Director of Music at t.bell@utoronto.ca. There are a number of choral scholarships available to U of T students which are renewed annually, in addition to volunteer singers from the university and wider community. Choral experience is desirable.

William Byrd Lecture and Recital: Nov. 22, 2023

He lived during a complex and politicised age, deftly balancing the demands of church and state, all the while composing music of great beauty. Join us as we examine the fascinating music of William Byrd, and why it remains so relevant to us today. Music Director Thomas Bell and Bevan Organ Scholar Peter Bayer.

A Service of Advent Lessons and Carols: Dec. 10, 2023

Advent Carol Service in the Chapel in 2022A cherished College tradition stretching back more than 50 years, please join us for the traditional Service of Advent Lessons and Carols on the Second Sunday of Advent.

  • Sunday, December 10 at 4 pm

By candlelight, the Chapel Choir will sing traditional Advent carols, directed by Thomas Bell, and assisted by Peter Bayer, the Bevan organ scholar. The Rev’d Canon Andrea Budgey, Humphrys Chaplain, will officiate, joined by readers from the College community. The service will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.

Before the service, in-person attendees are invited to a drop-in Advent Social in the Divinity Common Room from 3 pm to 4 pm. Please register using the link above as space is limited.
