Trinity’s Comprehensive Paper: FAQs

Can a post-doc be my supervisor or second reader?

No. It must be a tenure stream, or equivalent faculty member.

If my paper were to be published, who is the primary author?

For students in TRN477, you the student are the primary author of completed work in the Comprehensive Paper program.

I am in my 2nd year of studies. Can I enroll in the Comprehensive Paper?

No. Students must be in their 3rd year or higher to enroll in the Comprehensive Paper program.

I have already graduated but I am interested in the Comprehensive Paper program. Is this possible?

Yes, but students must contact their undergraduate College Registrar to activate student status.

How early can I start planning for my application for the student-led application?

As early as possible. Students have had more success planning their application during the spring and summer because faculty are typically more accessible during this time.

Do I have to be a Trinity student to enroll in Trinity's Comprehensive Paper?

Yes, you have to be a Trinity College student to enroll in Trinity’s Comprehensive Paper.

What is the difference between Comprehensive Paper and Independent Studies?

The differences are somewhat subtle. The Comprehensive Paper emphasizes critical analytical skills and writing skills. The Independent Studies, on the other hand is more of a research report. Required elements include: title, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, figures and tables.

Also, the Independent Studies program is open to students of all colleges. The Comprehensive Paper is open to Trinity College students.
