Independent Studies: FAQs

Can a post-doc be my supervisor or second reader?

No. It must be a tenure stream, or equivalent faculty member.

If my paper were to be published, who is the primary author?

You the student are the primary author of completed work in the Independent Studies program.

How many Independent Studies courses can I take?

There is no limit to the number of Independent Studies courses you can take but students should check with their College Registrar in advance of submitting an application.

I am in my 2nd year of studies. Can I take an Independent Studies course?

No. Students must be in their 3rd year or higher to enroll in the Independent Studies program.

I have already graduated but I am interested in taking an Independent Studies course. Is this possible?

Yes, but students must contact their undergraduate College Registrar to activate student status.

How early can I start planning for my application?

As early as possible. Students have had more success planning their Independent Studies application during the spring and summer because faculty are typically more accessible during this time.

I'm a member of another College, can I enroll in the Independent Studies course?

The Trinity College Independent Studies Program is open to students of all colleges.

What is the difference between Independent Studies and Comprehensive Paper?

The differences are somewhat subtle. The Comprehensive Paper emphasizes critical analytical skills and writing skills. The independent studies, on the other hand is more of a research report. Required elements include: title, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, figures and tables.

Also, the Independent Studies program is open to students of all colleges. The Comprehensive Paper is open to Trinity College students.
